My Puppy
[info]bean_an_oiche
Is so cute! I got him a collar today. All my neices and nephews came with me to the vets to pick it out - they insisted I do it <i>right now</i> thank you very much! So we put that on him without fuss, but he simply started chewing on the lead when we tried that on him. Gonna have to work that out...

Puppy!
[info]bean_an_oiche
I got a puppy! Yay! His name is Max and he's a border collie, or so I'm told. I've looked at pics of border collies on the internet but while the colouring is right the hair is shorter than the pics suggest. Still he is most lovely and when I get some pics I'll stick them up on - um.. what's the name of that place... I've already linked there once before...

Oh well, I'll remember it!

I went to Cragganowen yesterday (Monday) to take photos which I'm going to include in my thesis. See them here in flickr

They look pretty good, if I do say so myself! :D

:D

I studied for 16 hours for an exam this morning only to have nothing I studied come up in Section 2. And considering that 16 hrs was from about 2pm yesterday to 6am this morning (the exam was at 9am - so no sleepies in between) I was pretty darn mad!

I wasn't the only one to suffer that. Actually all but maybe two (definatly one, I didn't get to talk to the other girl before the exam) hadn't covered what came up (all is 5 people - the enitire class is 7).

So we're mad... :D mad as badgers...

Why Geeks and Nerds are Worth it.
[info]bean_an_oiche

I found this on Craigslist via Stumble. Thought it might be appreciated here!

---

In the wide world of dating, there are many options. Do you go for the flashy guy with the smooth smile, or the dude in the corner typing away on his laptop? The following are reasons why I think my fellow females should pay more attention to the quiet geeks and nerds, and less attention to the flashy boys.

1.) While geeks and nerds may be awkward, they’re well-meaning 9 out of 10 times. That smooth dude with the sly grin and the spider hands? Wonder what HIS intentions are... plus, I’ve never had a geek guy not call me when he said he would. Score major points THERE.

2.) They’re useful. In this tech-savvy world, it’s great to have a b/f who can make your laptop, desktop, and just about anything else that plugs into a wall behave itself.

3.) They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such... but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends.

4.) Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too.

5.) They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing?

6.) Most are quite good at remembering dates. Like birthdates and such, especially if they know it’ll make you happy. Due again to their neglected status, they’re more attentive than guys who “have more options”. Plus, with all that down time without a steady girlfriend, they’ll likely have mental lists of all the things they’d love to do once they GOT a girlfriend.

7.) Sex. Yep. Sex. I’m not really familiar with this myself, but I’ve friends who’ve been intimate with geek guys and it’s raves all around. They say a virgin wrote the Kama Sutra... all that time thinking about sex, imagining sex, dreaming about sex, (they are male after all) coupled with a desire to make you happy? Use your imagination.

8.) They’re relatively low-maintenance. Most can be fueled on pizza, Twinkies and Coffee. No complicated dinners needed here, so if you’re not the best cook, eh. Can you order a pizza?

9.) Most frequent bars as often as slugs frequent salt mines. You won’t have to worry much about your geek guy getting his “groove” on with club hotties because, frankly, he’ll be too busy rooting around under his computer wondering where that spare cable went. You won’t have to worry about him flirting with other women because, 9 out of 10 times, he’ll zip right by them in a perfect b-line towards the nearest electronics store. I’ve seen this happen.
Me: “Eww. Victoria Secret’s Models... They’re so skinny. How is that feminine? You can see her ribs!”
Geek Guy: “ooooooo...”
Me: “Hey!” *notices he is staring lustfully towards the computer store*
Geek Guy: “What?”
Me: “Never mind...”

10.) Although he may not want to go to every outing with you, you can arrange swaps, as in, you’ll go to his Gamer Con dressed as an elf princess if he’ll take you to the ballet. Plus, if he doesn’t want to go someplace with you, you won’t have to worry much about what he’s up to. You’ll probably come home to find him asleep on his keyboard in a sea of Mt. Dew cans with code blinking from the screen. It’s ok. He’s used to this. Just toss a blanket over him and turn out the light.

11.) His friends aren’t jerks. I can’t stress this enough. You’ll more likely get “Omg! A GIRL!! Can I see?!” than “Hey hot stuff back that ass up here and let me get some grub on...” They’re awkward geeks too and will, 9 times out of 10, treat you with the utmost respect and, more than likely, a note of awe. A cute girl picked one of their clan to date? It could happen to them! Hope! Drag some of your single girlfriends over, open up a pack of Mt. Dew, crack open the DnD set and get working. Nothing impresses geek guys more than a girl who can hack-n-slash (well ok maybe if she can code... a geek can dream).

12.) They’re rarely if ever possessive. They trust you, so you can be yourself around them. You like to walk around the house in a ratty t-shirt for comfort? He won’t care. He does too! They won’t get pissy if you don’t wear make-up or don’t want to bother primping your hair. If you gain a few pounds, they won’t try their best to make you feel like crap.

13.) They’re usually very well educated. Physics majors and the like. See #5. You won’t have to listen to him blathering on about his car (ok maybe a little), he’ll have loads of other interesting things to talk about. Politics, world events, how much the chicken burgers down at the local place rock, so long as you douse them in hot sauce...

14.) You’ll almost never have to hear, “Yaw dawg whazzap!!” plop out of their mouths. Unless it’s in jest. They spell properly, use correct punctuation, and are able to tell the difference between the toilet and the floor. They almost never get “wasted”, so you won’t have to worry about coming home to find him and his friends passed out on the floor amidst a pile of beer bottles. Mt. Dew cans, perhaps...

15.) And the final reason why geeks and nerds make great boyfriends: They actually give a damn about you. Not how you look (though that’s a plus), not how skinny you are, not how much make-up you primp yourself up with, but they like you for you. That kind of thing lasts longer than “DaMN baby you got a fine ass!!!” Believe me.

I'm not going to post which ones I totally agree with. Mostly, cos I'd be repeating pretty much all of it - with relation to cultural changes of course.

St Stephen's Day
[info]bean_an_oiche
Got up late... and then got ready to Go On The Wren (pronounced "Ran" - cos we're Irish!!!).

This involved getting dressed up in strange costumes - we took a picture! - getting our musical instruments - I had a harmonica and Mary-Ellen had a bodhrán which she beated with a big stick (no really, she did) - and heading out.

Mary-Ellen had a bandana over her face and I tied an tie over my nose (I needed my mouth to play the harmonica) so nobody would know who we were (we looked that ridiculous!) and we headed out to the neighbouring village cos Simon and his friends we're going out in Tulla.

It was fun, we sang the usual song

The wren, the wren,
The King of all birds,
St Stephens Day got caught in the furse,
Up with the kettle,
Down with the pan,
Give up a penny to bury the wren!

Sang with extreme gusto and a bit of a dance on Mary-Ellen's part (I didn't want to be jingling the money box).

Then while they either went and got money or they waited for it we went on and sang Little Drummer Boy.

We also went to Quin.

It was all good fun. And we made a little money. So now we've paid Sheila back for the Declan O Rourke tickets, and we almost have enough for both our first weeks rent! Good Day!

Happy Christmas!
[info]bean_an_oiche

(AND last of the Happy Meme!)

It's Christmas day and I'm sitting at my laptop by the Christmas tree, light aglow (well, ashin-ing, rather than aglow - it ain't on fire people!) and I'm just waiting til I'm allowed open my pressie!!!!

Come on, Brian!!!! Wakey, Wakey!!!

---
EDIT 1 - 14.45:

Right, so.
Yes I know I'm impatient people, but e oncome on! I had been hearing about this pressie since mid november and nearly before. I had been patient! And then my patients ran out (I wouldn't make a good doctor...)

So, ya. Brian signed in to Skype moments after that (-ish) and I got to open (tear, rip and throw aside the wrapping) my pressie, and-

It's actually brilliant, it is a stroke of brilliance, but um, ya, don't tell him I said that or he'll get a big head....

It's a rug, crochetted in greens and greys, with the IDWCon09 pint logo (the one Brian had made)....

It's fantastic!

And ya, I will be showing it off at the Convention!

---
EDIT 2 - 17.26

Christmas Dinner was as filling as usual. People falling asleep all over the place... And de neices and nephews are after coming in so I'll go.

---
EDIT 3 - Dec 26 1925

And so, the next day, she manages to come back to the entry she started the next day.

Yes, yesterday was fun. The kids came in and  we got little pressies and free cans of coke! Yea! I got perfume - is that a hint?

And then we went into the middle room to Mam and Orla - David and Anthony (his dad) fell asleep in the front room! So cute...

And we talked and the kids told us what they got for Christmas and stuff. And then we decided to play Charades.

And we had to teach them how to play. It was weird and fun and silly and we starting to fight over who's turn it was... :D Yes, we are just big kids!!!

End Day

Writer's Block: Top 10
[info]bean_an_oiche
My Top 10 Events for 2008
in Chronological Order
(Except that it's more like a Top 7)

Oedipus on stage
--- starring in Oedipus... as Oedipus.

The show was based on the Yeats script (I think) and adapted til it was about 20 minutes long. Then we added music and dance and song. I loved it, I thought we did a fantastic job on it. I suppose it helped that it was more dramatic than what we had done in previous years and that I was Oedipus, and therefore had the largest speaking role.
It also helped that most of my family came along and actually admitted that I had some acting ability,

Galway Festival
                                                 ---  was great fun!
I'd had a very tiring day at work, and a very annoying one. And I had wanted to go anyway. It was Wednesday. I had Thursday and Friday off. So I texted MaryEllen, told her to get ready and find out what was on that night. Drove home, packed a bag and went. We rang BnBs on the way up and booked a room. Dropped our bags and headed out! We missed the first thing we had wanted to see, traffic holding us up... so we went to the tourism office to find out what else was on. Of course most things had been booked or sold out - it was about 6 o'clock so it was out own fault really.
Anyway, we found the one event that wasn't all sold out, the posters looked brilliant, we got tickets just as the queues were starting. Got into the queue and realised that the posters that were up, were there from all different events and not necessarily from that nights one. Right...
So, we were talking to the woman behind us and so we just asked her what was on. And, wow :), was she surprised!
"You're going to see something and you don't even know what it is?"
   "Pretty much!"
There were two acts, a solo singer from South America, and some sort of reggae band from the Sahara. The singer was brilliant. The band, not so much. But that was fine, the girl was well worth the few quid we'd spent. And so we went out. But we didn't really stay out long, we were really tired. Espicially me since, you know, I'd been at work that day as well.
Got up the next day and we mooched out the place. Nothing was happening til about 12ish so we decided to go out to Salthill which is 5mins drive to go to the funfair. Or course that didn't open til nearly 12 anyway. But we hung around, went on a few rides, got a free ice cream and drove as fast and as quickly as possible to get tickets for the comedy show at 12ish.
Didn't get them, but there had been so much interest that they had put on a repeat. Which was great. After that we basically walked up and down the streets watching the buskers and magicians. Got henna tattoos. And sunburn. And then went home, cos MaryEllen had to babysit.
        It was fun.

DWcon08
--- first con, will not the last, had a brill time.
This con was brilliant. I didn't actually get to see alot of it cos I was in rehearsals most of the time (I only had a very small part but I didn't want to let John down since he had simply offered me the part). But I got to join in a good few games, and I saw most of the interviews that I really wanted to. It was however a very expensive weekend.
That and the getting to it was more difficult that I had originally planned... But let's not think about that for now, shall we?
                  Highlights....
                                       The Bedtime story
                                       The Dragon Racing
                                       The Play (and the Proposal)
The Conversations (with all and anyone really)
The Game - where's the mime, my lord
                                       The Masquerade - very funny
                                       And others!!!

Dead Monkey Party at DWcon08
--- Brill party, crazy games (and people), met someone special.
I didn't even know this was happening. It probably would have helped if I had looked at the programme sometime before booking the hotel, but then again.... So me and Mary-Ellen had been in the play (she was props) and therefore we hadn't checked out on time and therefore to avoid getting charged extra, we checked out while the closing ceremony was happening! Argh! not so good. So we hadn't booked a room for that night and we were getting picked up that evening by our uncle who lived about an hour away and was going to bring us to the airport the next morning.
But in order that we might stay longer and not miss such a crazy event (we were going by the name) we went on the internets and so missed the rest of the closing ceremony that we hadn't already missed by packing at such a time. We looked up the trains, the planes, the buses. Even taxis.
It wasn't going to happen. We would not be able to get from the hotel in the morning by ourselves to the airport. And we didn't feel right asking our uncle to pick us up from the hotel at that time to drop us at the airport for our plane.
See, we had the offer of a room. Richard, who had been in the play with us, had offered a bed to us, so we had someplace to rest our heads, but the transport was lacking.
So, we resigned ourselves to missing the last blast and went round giving out hugs and saying our goodbyes.
Then we went outside to meet the uncle.
The uncle who was more than a little surprised to see us looking a bit down of the mouth.
So, we told him we were missing the party....
And like a good Irish uncle he told us to get ourselved back in there and have a good time and he would pick us up in the morning!!!!
We actually exploded with happyness!!! Hugged and kissed the man like he was Santa Claus and gave him lots of chocolate!!!
And hence we got to go to the DMP!!!
That man!! Anyway, this lead, of course, to the Walk the Walk crazy style, Twister, Balloon Volleyball, Mornington Cresent, Word Dis-Association (I won!), meeting Torak, and of course meeting Brian.
       It was a good night.

Beginning to organise IDWC 09
--- not so much an event, but still!!
Mary-Ellen kept whinging that there was no Irish Con, so it was decided that we would organise one ourselves!!!

October 31st to November 05th 08
--- Went to England to see Brian
Halloween in England... except that it went unnoticed apart from the fireworks... the ones outside the window I mean.. ahem, yes those ones.
Went to London for the Nano meet. Met loads of new and exciting people, stayed in a nice hotel. Then back to Yorkshire.
Went for dinner - which was lovely, saw a castle, and the theatre where he works and plays. Watched Farscape. Had pizza. And, you know, had lots of fun.
           Going home was not fun.

December 12th to December 15th
                                               --- Went to Scotland
Torak had organised a Hogswatch BBQ and Bonfire meet. For more info see here
The BBQ was fun - I took charge, the bonfire couldn't happen cos Torak had ploughed up his field with the Landie and probably cos the wood was too wet. Top Gear was fun. As was the playing with (airsoft) guns - apart from the whole me-giving-out-about-them-actually-being-pointed-at-people bits. Trying on kevlar. Took lots of photos. Gonna have to put them on Flicker or something. Will link them if I do.
And, no offence to anyone else, but the highlight for me was, of course, getting to see my boyfriend. :D

So that concludes my Top 10 (7). I probably won't bother adding anything more though I have no doubt that Christmas Day would make it onto this list if I could be bothered waiting that long.

Happy Meme
[info]bean_an_oiche
It's Sunday. That's always a good thing...

Happy Meme (still going...)
[info]bean_an_oiche
I'm happy because I'm finished college for Christmas! Yea!!!

Happy Meme (yes, this again)
[info]bean_an_oiche

It's supposed to go on for 8 straight days. I got tagged on Thursday, and posted my first one so late Thursday night that it was actually Friday morning... And we all know how well that turned out! :D Anyways, I posted Sunday through to Tuesdays since and only missed out Saturday...  Damn, that means I've four more to go...

Alright, today I'm happy because the day is over. Which technically means it's a happy "tonight", and not  a happy "today".

Yes, the day is over, classes finished for the day which means no more pointless drivel and people not listening to what other people are saying and yet managing to bring up those points as if they were their own in the next breath - thankfuly this no longer applies to me since I've pointedly refrained from speaking in the group when this kind of "discussion" is taking place.

I'm also happy because I've ignored my college work (which will of course bite me in the ass soon) for the last few hours to spend a very pleasureable evening reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaimen. If you haven't read this book, read it now!

So that's my happy for today. How's your happy?

Happy Meme (you know the one...)
[info]bean_an_oiche
Various words connected to this meme - "Happy" - "Bastard" - "Tag" - "Post" - "Meme" - "Whatever"

Ok, that last one is new. But whatever... What makes me happy today?

It's my birthday!!! Yeah!
And I have one pressie... It's fabulous!!! I love it so much! Well, I got it on Friday, but it was for today and I was showing it off today to my sis and my classmates so it counts!

Also, I had a full nights sleep last night, in the very warm, in a proper bed! (In Scotland it was the floor of a very cold cottage which didn't help the sleep.) But on the other hand I woke up alone... so no kisses and cuddles...

So kind of a mixed happy today, peeps.

Night!

This thing again...
[info]bean_an_oiche
Happy Thing (again)

I'm going to update this now, early in the day, because the happy will not be as happy after many hours of travel by car (to Prestwick  airport), by plane (to shannon), by car (home) and by car again (to  Tralee and college). That's a lot of travelling in one day.

So the happy right now is: I woke up, warm and, well a bit tired and sore (sleeping on the floor will do that) but with kisses and hugs on standby.

So that's why I'm happy.

:)

You Bastard (Otherwise known as Happy Meme)
[info]bean_an_oiche
So, first off, apologies to anyone who ruined their day by reading my badly spelled piece of **** the other day....

HAPPY

Still in Scotland.

Still with boyfriend.

Having a really good time!

Happy Meme (otherwise known as 'you bastard!')
[info]bean_an_oiche

Right, apparently the rules stipulate that I must - for eight days - tell people what is making me happy on that particular day. Well, I'm just back from the pub. Don't know what that's important except for the fact that it's definatly making me press backspace far more often than usual....

<quote>First thought on reading this was that I thought that no 1 on the list would be that "I would be seeing 'so-an-so' in a certain no of hours...
Second thought was "you bastard! why me?!"<unquote>

Right so, what is making me happy today.

Well, for one thing, I'm just back from the pub. Which I believe I just said (I'm beginning to think I should leave all the spelling mistakes in just to proe it)

Ohwell...

Anytway, what makes me happy today?

I'm drunk, shiny lights makes me happy today.

Nut what specifially makes he happy today?

I'm a cettain number of hours I will be on a plce (plane).

Wjy does what make me ahppy? Cos I'll be seeing me boyfriedn 9the me is not a spelling mistake, the trest is)

Anyway. I'm ahppy cos I'm a tille tipsey.

I really should go back and correct all the spelling mistake.

But I'm sure you'll figure it all out.

Night!!!!   :*

Éalú - Lyrics
[info]bean_an_oiche

The show needs a Maiden Scene Song. So Kathryn went away and made up a song in English, and we would translate it into Irish. As anyone who speaks two languages knows, that doesn't work.

This is what she made up:

When the dew hangs on the flower
In the glen the leafy bower
(da da da da da da da da - she hadn't that thought of)
Until the coming of eventide

Very romantic. It was never going to work. Our folklore lecturer, Muirís, was all excited to translate it. And he did agree that it was very romantic. And he tried valiently to break it to her gently, re it not translating right for her. It didn't work. She continued to offer up what I would consider silly suggestions, like "What's the ' the light of the afternoon sun' in Irish?" And it was never to her satisfaction. Oh well, I don't feel undue pity for her.

This is the Irish song that we made up (and sorta translated) in class (also, we made up a second verse in class):

Lonradh uisciúil drúcht ón bhlathanna
Ins sa ghleann le deora géaga
A' ní, a' glanadh, a' súgradh, luascadh
Síoraí suaisc ó lá go lá.

Fal da' ral da' thar na sléibhte
Fal da' ral da' cré na mbánta
Fal da' ral da' uisce' a' sileadh
Síoraí suaisc ó lá go lá.

And in English this means:

Shiny watery dew on flowers,
In the glen with tears of branches (leaves)
Washing, cleaning, playing, swinging,
Enjoying our work from day to day.

Fal da' ral da'  over the mountains
Fal da' ral da' soil of the earth
Fal da' ral da' falling water
Síoraí suaisc ó lá go lá.

I like it, and the sound is cool. If we can get it up on youtube at some point I'll add a link. So this was put to the melody we had made up previously and we sung it in class for Muiris. He was ecstatic! And while he was giving out the notes he had prepared for us, he asked us to sing it again.  Cos he loves us!
