My Top 10 Events for 2008
in Chronological Order
(Except that it's more like a Top 7)
Oedipus on stage
--- starring in Oedipus... as Oedipus. The show was based on the Yeats script (I think) and adapted til it was about 20 minutes long. Then we added music and dance and song. I loved it, I thought we did a fantastic job on it. I suppose it helped that it was more dramatic than what we had done in previous years and that I was Oedipus, and therefore had the largest speaking role.
It also helped that most of my family came along and actually admitted that I had some acting ability,
Galway Festival --- was great fun! I'd had a very tiring day at work, and a very annoying one. And I had wanted to go anyway. It was Wednesday. I had Thursday and Friday off. So I texted MaryEllen, told her to get ready and find out what was on that night. Drove home, packed a bag and went. We rang BnBs on the way up and booked a room. Dropped our bags and headed out! We missed the first thing we had wanted to see, traffic holding us up... so we went to the tourism office to find out what else was on. Of course most things had been booked or sold out - it was about 6 o'clock so it was out own fault really.
Anyway, we found the one event that wasn't all sold out, the posters looked brilliant, we got tickets just as the queues were starting. Got into the queue and realised that the posters that were up, were there from all different events and not necessarily from that nights one. Right...
So, we were talking to the woman behind us and so we just asked her what was on. And, wow :), was she surprised!
"You're going to see something and you don't even know what it is?"
"Pretty much!"
There were two acts, a solo singer from South America, and some sort of reggae band from the Sahara. The singer was brilliant. The band, not so much. But that was fine, the girl was well worth the few quid we'd spent. And so we went out. But we didn't really stay out long, we were really tired. Espicially me since, you know, I'd been at work that day as well.
Got up the next day and we mooched out the place. Nothing was happening til about 12ish so we decided to go out to Salthill which is 5mins drive to go to the funfair. Or course that didn't open til nearly 12 anyway. But we hung around, went on a few rides, got a free ice cream and drove as fast and as quickly as possible to get tickets for the comedy show at 12ish.
Didn't get them, but there had been so much interest that they had put on a repeat. Which was great. After that we basically walked up and down the streets watching the buskers and magicians. Got henna tattoos. And sunburn. And then went home, cos MaryEllen had to babysit.
It was fun.
DWcon08 --- first con, will not the last, had a brill time.
This con was brilliant. I didn't actually get to see alot of it cos I was in rehearsals most of the time (I only had a very small part but I didn't want to let John down since he had simply offered me the part). But I got to join in a good few games, and I saw most of the interviews that I really wanted to. It was however a very expensive weekend.
That and the getting to it was more difficult that I had originally planned... But let's not think about that for now, shall we?
Highlights....
The Bedtime story
The Dragon Racing
The Play (and the Proposal)
The Conversations (with all and anyone really)
T
he Game - where's the mime, my lord
The Masquerade - very funny
And others!!!
Dead Monkey Party at DWcon08 --- Brill party, crazy games (and people), met someone special.
I didn't even know this was happening. It probably would have helped if I had looked at the programme sometime before booking the hotel, but then again.... So me and Mary-Ellen had been in the play (she was props) and therefore we hadn't checked out on time and therefore to avoid getting charged extra, we checked out while the closing ceremony was happening! Argh! not so good. So we hadn't booked a room for that night and we were getting picked up that evening by our uncle who lived about an hour away and was going to bring us to the airport the next morning.
But in order that we might stay longer and not miss such a crazy event (we were going by the name) we went on the internets and so missed the rest of the closing ceremony that we hadn't already missed by packing at such a time. We looked up the trains, the planes, the buses. Even taxis.
It wasn't going to happen. We would not be able to get from the hotel in the morning by ourselves to the airport. And we didn't feel right asking our uncle to pick us up from the hotel at that time to drop us at the airport for our plane.
See, we had the offer of a room. Richard, who had been in the play with us, had offered a bed to us, so we had someplace to rest our heads, but the transport was lacking.
So, we resigned ourselves to missing the last blast and went round giving out hugs and saying our goodbyes.
Then we went outside to meet the uncle.
The uncle who was more than a little surprised to see us looking a bit down of the mouth.
So, we told him we were missing the party....
And like a good Irish uncle he told us to get ourselved back in there and have a good time and he would pick us up in the morning!!!!
We actually exploded with happyness!!! Hugged and kissed the man like he was Santa Claus and gave him lots of chocolate!!!
And hence we got to go to the DMP!!!
That man!! Anyway, this lead, of course, to the Walk the Walk crazy style, Twister, Balloon Volleyball, Mornington Cresent, Word Dis-Association (I won!), meeting Torak, and of course meeting Brian.
It was a good night.
Beginning to organise IDWC 09 --- not so much an event, but still!! Mary-Ellen kept whinging that there was no Irish Con, so it was decided that we would organise one ourselves!!!
October 31st to November 05th 08 --- Went to England to see Brian Halloween in England... except that it went unnoticed apart from the fireworks... the ones outside the window I mean.. ahem, yes those ones.
Went to London for the Nano meet. Met loads of new and exciting people, stayed in a nice hotel. Then back to Yorkshire.
Went for dinner - which was lovely, saw a castle, and the theatre where he works and plays. Watched Farscape. Had pizza. And, you know, had lots of fun.
Going home was not fun.
December 12th to December 15th --- Went to Scotland Torak had organised a Hogswatch BBQ and Bonfire meet. For more info see
here.
The BBQ was fun - I took charge, the bonfire couldn't happen cos Torak had ploughed up his field with the Landie and probably cos the wood was too wet. Top Gear was fun. As was the playing with (airsoft) guns - apart from the whole me-giving-out-about-them-actually-being-p
ointed-at-people bits. Trying on kevlar. Took lots of photos. Gonna have to put them on Flicker or something. Will link them if I do.
And, no offence to anyone else, but the highlight for me was, of course, getting to see my boyfriend. :D
So that concludes my Top 10 (7). I probably won't bother adding anything more though I have no doubt that Christmas Day would make it onto this list if I could be bothered waiting that long.
